About the event

Serenade of the ROSE opens Republic of String Ensembles’ inaugural season with two luminous works from the Czech string tradition: Antonín Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings and Josef Suk’s Serenade for Strings. Composed while Suk was a student of Dvořák at the Prague Conservatory, Suk’s Serenade reflects his teacher’s encouragement to explore a lighter, more lyrical voice. The result is a warm and expressive work that balances youthful lyricism with graceful restraint. Dvořák’s beloved Serenade for Strings, written in an astonishingly short period in 1875, remains one of the most cherished works in the string repertoire. Its five movements move effortlessly between songful lyricism, dance-like charm, and buoyant energy, capturing both intimacy and exuberance. Together, these works form a program that celebrates clarity, warmth, and the expressive range of the string ensemble.
